"Apothecary" is a historical name for a medical professional who formulates and dispenses materia medica to physicians, surgeons and patients.

In addition to pharmacy responsibilities, the apothecary offered general medical advice and a range of services, such as surgery and midwifery. Apothecaries often operated through a retail shop which, in addition to ingredients for medicines, sold tobacco and patent medicines. The apothecaries also used many other herbs not listed.

In Stronghold, the Apothecary provides resistance to diseases (see cows for more info). A single Apothecary provides all peasants with a 20% (up to 60% with 3 apothecaries) immunity to diseases. The healers that work in the apothecaries will also patrol your city and keep a watch for disease clouds, in which case any are found the healers will run towards them and start curing them.
